Dental Crowns
Serving Santa Clarita, Valencia, Newhall, Saugus, and San Fernando Valley, California
A dental crown restores a broken or decayed tooth to its’ natural appearance. A crown can be made from a variety of materials, depending on the location in your mouth, and your dental needs and desires. If your tooth is badly cracked, chipped or otherwise damaged, a dental crown will restore your tooth and protect it from future damage. At Aesthetic Dentistry of Valencia, we offer four different types of crowns, described below.
All Porcelain Crowns
Made of durable porcelain, these crowns are ideal for the front of your mouth, where your affected tooth is visible and subject to less pressure from chewing. Because of their glass-like appearance, all-porcelain crowns have the same translucency as your tooth enamel so no one will be able to tell them apart from your real teeth. Newer porcelains have been developed that allow porcelain crowns to be used on back teeth.
Zirconium Crowns
Zirconium crowns are a new type of dental crown, made from zirconium dioxide. This is high-strength ceramic material used in hip replacements and in the aerospace industry. Zirconium crowns are also indistinguishable from your real teeth. Their strong, white and translucent properties rival all-porcelain crowns.
Zirconium-Fused-to-Porcelain Crowns
Another type of zirconium crowns are ones covered with a layer of porcelain. These crowns are similar in strength to porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, but are more natural in appearance, since there is no metal that can show through the porcelain. Zirconium-fused-to-porcelain crowns can be used on your back teeth, as well as your front teeth due to their strength and aesthetic properties.
CEREC Crowns
CEREC crowns are basically a variation of all-porcelain crowns. These are made from pure ceramic, but are milled by computer technology called “Computer-Assisted Design/Computer-Assisted Manufacture," or "CAD-CAM." With this innovative dental technology, your crown is made by a computer while you wait, which eliminates the need for a second appointment and temporary crown. CEREC material and technology can also be used for fillings, and are more durable and long-lasting than the composite material used in tooth-colored fillings.
