A dental implant is the strongest, most durable option if you have lost one or more teeth. A dental implant is a small piece of titanium that is placed into your jaw bone and acts as your natural tooth root. A restoration such as dental crown can then be attached for a secure, permanent solution. Dental implants are ideal because they will never slip or make embarrassing clicking sounds that dentures may make. Because they are secured to your jawbone, a dental implant is much stronger than a dental bridge, and will not contribute to bone loss.
If a dental implant is recommended to replace your missing tooth, is important to know that this treatment consists of two components: a surgical phase and a restorative phase. Therefore, dental implant surgery generally takes between four and nine months to fully complete.
The Process
After the titanium implant is surgically implanted, it is often recommended that you wait several months so that your bone can grow around the implant (called osseointegration) to hold it in place. You will be given an appliance with teeth on it, so you will never be without teeth during the months between surgeries. Once the osseointegration is completed, a restoration will be permanently attached to the end of the implant.
Dental implants are made of titanium, which your bone should grow safely and effectively around. But this does not always happen. In rare circumstances, if your bone fails to integrate with the implant, you can wait for your bone to heal and try again in a few months.
The Recovery Period
After your implant is placed, many people experience a mild soreness, bleeding, or swelling, which can be treated with over-the-counter medications. You should be able to return to work the day after the procedure.
Between the first and second surgery, you will need to wait three to six months, depending on your healing progress. The growth of your bone around the implant can create a dull ache as well, but can be alleviated with medication. This discomfort lasts a few days after the surgery.
Proper oral hygiene is extremely important during the healing process. Poor oral care can lead to swelling in your gum tissue, which is a leading cause of implant failure. Be sure to maintain the appropriate check-ups so Dr. Joel Miller can monitor your implant progress.
